THE PROBLEM: Our landfills are over run with plastic trash that is harmful to the environment. Most of the plastic in our landfills is made up of unwanted, children’s plastic toys that have been thrown away because the child has outgrown it. Because toys are made from a mixture of different materials they can’t be recycled, and unfortunately most of it is burned. When plastic is burned it releases harmful greenhouse gases and toxins into the atmosphere.
THE SOLUTION: If we don’t want additional greenhouse gases in the atmosphere we shouldn’t burn plastic toys. Burning plastic emits 2.9 kg of CO2 for every kg of plastic burned. Donating the toys to children in need instead of pitching it in the trash not only makes a child’s dream come true, but it also preserves the planet for the children of the future. It is a win/win end 2 end!
